Paris is my favourite city in the entire world and I’m heading there later this month. I am so excited about my upcoming trip that I’m already mentally packing my bags! Here are a few essentials to make sure you pack for Paris:

1 Mila Cap Toe Leather Ballet Flats | $136 | J Crew
Comfortable shoes are a must for virtually any destination but in Paris, ‘comfy shoes’ definitely doesn’t mean sneakers. Leave sneakers of any kind at home unless you intend to hit the treadmill at your hotel. Don’t give those stylish Parisians one more reason to think we North Americans don’t know how to dress! Simple shoes like these ballet flats are pretty and comfortable.

2 Colorblocked Blanche Dress | $498 | Kate Spade
Dinnertime in Paris is cause for celebration, don’t you think? For those of us who don’t live in this spectacular city, even the everyday things seem to take on a sense of occasion. You needn’t go overboard for dinner but I would pack at least one cocktail dress for a special night out.

3 Marc Jacobs Quilted Leather Shoulder Bag | $600 | Nordstrom
You’ll need a little evening bag for nights out. This one is definitely pricey but I love it. It’s a great size, you can use it as a shoulder bag or a clutch and the soft leather is gorgeous!

4 Classic Trench | $198 | Banana Republic
A classic trench is a great coat for traveling to a city like London or Paris because it’s versatile and practical. Throw it on with jeans and flats during the day or with a dress in the evening if you need it.

5 Mini Umbrella | $48 | Tory Burch
You just never know when the heavens are going to open up but with this mini umbrella, you’ll always be prepared. It’s so small, it will easily fit in your suitcase and bag without taking up much room.

6 Dotted West Scarf | $118 | Anthropologie
As always, a scarf is a travel essential for pretty much any destination but for Paris, this silk scarf in pretty pastels is parfait!

7 Moroccanoil Shampoo & Conditioner | $20 | moroccanoil.com
Since I travel with carry-on only, I won’t be able to pack full size bottles of shampoo and conditioner, due to airline restrictions on liquids. But if you plan on checking a bag anyway, I suggest throwing these in there. Normally, I would never suggest traveling with shampoo and conditioner; all hotels have them. But for some reason, many hotels in Paris seem to not have conditioner, which for me, is a big problem. If it’s a problem for you too, travel prepared.

8 Beret | $24 | American Apparel
What? It’s Paris. If you can’t wear a beret in Paris, then where can you?

My personal staples are the tote or the messenger bag. The latter helps keep my hands free while walking around Paris with my little daughter and taking pictures. A bigger tote or shoulder bag (that can be zipped shut) comes in handy for carrying my essentials and my daughter’s things, including some small shopping.
